Project Pan: Makeup Collection

After starting to sort through my massive pile of skincare products, I also have had a very long hard look at my makeup collection. And while I don’t own a lot of makeup, I want a makeup collection that gets used.

I think a major problem area in my makeup collection is base products. As my skin is super pale, and most European brands don’t have a colour match for me (which I find super hilarious), I tended to stick with Asian foundations. Missha’s Magic Cushion Cover Lasting in #21 Light Beige and Magic Cushion Moist Up also in #21 Light Beige, are two beautiful foundations that match my skin tone quite well. Word of warning though: the Magic Cushion Cover Lasting really is very covering and thus is a little darker in tone.

The Clinique Even Better Foundation is way too dark for me, even though the sales assistant claimed it was their lightest shade (it wasn’t) and it also has the horrible habit of bunching up on my skin. I think I will be tossing this, the formula and colour are just too terrible. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, on the other hand, is amazing! I wear 2 the lightest shade, and it matches wonderfully with my winter skin tone. The foundation is not only the newest addition to my makeup collection, but its formula also makes me really happy and I think I will repurchase a darker tone for summer.

For primers, I have REN Perfect Canvas and Kiehl’s Glow Formula. I continue to be super unsure on whether or not I need a primer, but the REN one has been great for added hydration during this impossibly dry winter. The Kiehl’s one, however, is too sparkly for me. Concealers are totally different though, with the Nars Soft Matte Concealer being the best thing ever. Currently, I tend to wear Vanilla, but I also own Chantilly (palest shade) which I think might actually be a little better.

Compared to base products, my other cheek and face products are very well curated (except I seem to have accumulated a lot of blush). I still have the Chanel Jouer Contraste Powder Blush in 72 Rose Initial and I doubt I’ll ever manage to finish it. Then there are the Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk (love!) and the Aritaum Sugarball Cushion Cheek Color in Daisy Coral which are both cream blushes that are perfect for that “just had a frolic in the meadow” look. I hope to finish the Cloud Paint during summer when I will be in both Beijing and Portland. But because I currently use a lot of bronzer (The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder in 01), I only pat on a little of the Aritaum blush. Also while the Honey Bronze is a perfect colour for pale skin, the packaging is utter crap. That is my second bronzer, the first one I exchanged after the lid came off. Since I bought it in London, I decided against getting it exchanged and am now looking for an alternative. Finally, I have one highlighter from alverde, that I have not used in ages, and that because it is natural beauty, is getting binned. And for powders, I have the MAC Prep + Prime transparent finishing powder pressed, which I currently don’t use a lot because it is so damn dry outside.

With eye makeup in my makeup collection, I pretty much use most of everything. The YSL Touche Eclat and the Chanel eyeliner are both getting the toss for being very old and or dried up. I’m not risking an eye infection, just because the eyeliner was so eye-watering expensive (see what I did there?). My MAC Prep + Prime eyeshadow primer is also nearing 1.5 years of use and I think I might soon replace it with a new one, maybe the NARS one.

Colour wise I really love my Urban Decay Naked Basic 2 palette for a neutral but defined look. If I want more sparkles or colour, I’ll either use the Urban Decay eyeshadow in Riff, or my Glossier Lidstar in Fawn. I think that I will be panning the palette this year, simply because I already have used a lot of the darker crease shades.

For eyebrows, I currently use the Etude Drawing Eye Brow in grey-brown and the alverde eyebrow gel. I need to get a new gel since I am scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one, and I already have a backup eye pencil, the TONYMOLY Lovely Eyebrow Pencil also in grey-brown. Besides that, I also have a small MAC Fix+ and a Dior Diorshow Flash Corrector from back when I used liquid eyeliner.

All of my makeup fits into a bunch of stackable Muji containers. Overall I’m quite happy with what I have, there are definitely areas where I’d like some more variety like with eyeshadows. Once I have the foundation situation under control, and found a better packaged bronzer, I think I’ll go a bit mad and add some stuff from NARS, Glossier, Hourglass and maybe Chanel. By then I should also have used up more, which should justify the purchases.
